Two days in Metz, a city of Jaumont stone whose yellow tone comes from a local ferruginous limestone. The trip opens at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, whose woven timber roof by Shigeru Ban recalls a Chinese hat, then the cathedral of Saint-Etienne, nicknamed the Good Lord's lantern for its 6,500 square metres of stained glass, several panels by Chagall. The Imperial quarter and its monumental station bear witness to German annexation between 1871 and 1918; the banks of the Seille, the Temple Neuf set on the water, and the Place Saint-Louis with its medieval arcades close the stay. The Centre Pompidou-Metz is closed on Tuesdays. Metz's Christmas market, among the largest in France, spreads across five squares in the centre.
