Two days in Bordeaux, whose entire eighteenth-century centre is a World Heritage site. The trip opens on the Place de la Bourse and its Miroir d'Eau, the largest reflecting pool in the world, alternating between mirror and mist, then crosses the Saint-Pierre quarter and its medieval lanes full of wine bars. The Cite du Vin with its eighth-floor tasting belvedere, the Rue Sainte-Catherine, Europe's longest pedestrian street, and Darwin, a former barracks turned alternative ecosystem, complete the city. Saint-Emilion, a UNESCO village forty minutes away, provides the vineyard escape. The Miroir d'Eau runs from April to October and photographs best at dawn. Chateau visits around Saint-Emilion must be booked online and often sell out in September during the harvest.
