48h in Marseille
Old Port, calanques, Panier district and bouillabaisse: intense Marseille in a weekend.
Two days in Marseille, France's oldest city, founded by Greek settlers 2,600 years ago. The route starts at the Vieux-Port and its morning fish market, climbs to Le Panier, the country's oldest quarter and now a street-art playground, then to Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Bonne Mere watching over the city and its islands. The Mucem with its walkway to Fort Saint-Jean, the Calanque de Sormiou thirty minutes from the centre, and the Vallon des Auffes for bouillabaisse, round out the stay. This is a blunt, loud, sunlit city. Sormiou is closed to cars in summer: take the shuttle, the bus, or walk in from Les Baumettes. Real bouillabaisse must be ordered a day ahead and is expensive; the Marseille charter guarantees what goes into it.
