Two days in Avignon, seat of the papacy from 1309 to 1377 and then of the antipopes until 1403. The trip opens at the Palace of the Popes, the largest Gothic palace in the world with fifteen thousand square metres of vaulted halls, then the Saint-Benezet bridge, of which four arches out of twenty-two withstood the Rhone floods. The Ile de la Barthelasse, Europe's largest river island, offers its riverside cafes and the best view of the ramparts; Villeneuve-les-Avignon and its charterhouse, then the Rocher des Doms with its panoramic garden over Mont Ventoux, close the stay. The Avignon festival in July fills the city and doubles prices: book months ahead, or come outside the festival when the palace can be visited in peace.
