Alsace Wine Road
From Marlenheim to Thann, 170 km of flowered villages, vineyards and half-timbered houses.
Five days on France's oldest wine route, created in 1953. From one flower-decked village to the next, the route links Obernai, Barr, Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg, with half-timbered houses and cellars where you taste riesling, gewurztraminer and pinot gris. This is a picture-postcard Alsace of storks, winstubs and vine-striped hillsides. Harvest, in September-October, brings the villages alive; Advent turns Riquewihr and Kaysersberg into Christmas sets. Book estate tastings, especially in autumn, and nominate a sober driver. The villages are best explored on foot: park at the edges and wander the lanes, loveliest early before the coaches arrive.
