Vendée: Wild Coast and Marshlands
Sandy beaches, salt marshes and Vendée hedgerows — a concentrated dose of Atlantic nature.
Three days in the Vendée, between wild coast and marshland. The route links Les Sables-d'Olonne and its great beach, the Île de Noirmoutier reached by the Gois causeway at low tide, Saint-Jean-de-Monts, the canal-laced Breton-Vendée marsh and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, a sardine-fishing port. This is a natural, seaside Vendée of long beaches, cycle paths and market-gardener villages. The Gois can only be crossed at low tide: always check the posted timetables, as drivers are caught out every year. Summer enlivens the resorts; spring and the off-season offer more calm. The bike is king along the flat, well-equipped coast.
