Serre-Ponçon Hike: Morgon and Boscodon
Hiking between lake and mountain in the Hautes-Alpes. From the summit of Grand Morgon to the forests of Boscodon, via the wild beaches of Lake Serre-Ponçon.
Three days of hiking between lake and mountain in the Embrunais, with the Grand Morgon as the goal. The route starts at Embrun and its hilltop town, climbs to Puy Sanieres, a balcony village at 1,200 metres and the trailhead, then to the Grand Morgon at 2,324 metres, a summit that commands the entire lake and opens onto the Ecrins, the Devoluy and the Durance valley. The descent crosses the state forest of Boscodon, one of the finest fir forests in France, down to the twelfth-century Romanesque abbey, before Savines-le-Lac for a swim and Crots. The Morgon climb involves eleven hundred metres of ascent on a steep, exposed path: start early and carry two litres of water, as there is no spring on the ridge.
