Ten days by campervan in the heart of Provence, when the plateaus turn lavender. The route links Avignon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and its antique dealers, the hilltop villages of Gordes and Roussillon with their blazing ochres, then Apt and the Valensole plateau, a purple sea stretching to the horizon. It's a journey of scent and light, punctuated by markets, abbeys and fields lined up to perfection. Bloom peaks from mid-June to mid-July: after that, the lavender is cut. Travelling by campervan gives you the freedom to chase the evening light, best for photos, but check on permitted aires, which are plentiful in the Luberon. Set off early to avoid heat and crowds at the busiest spots.
