Compostela: Le Puy-en-Velay to Conques
The most famous section of the Compostela trail in France, crossing the high plateaus of Aubrac and its solitary mountain huts.
Eight days on the Camino de Santiago, from Le Puy-en-Velay to Conques, on the legendary GR65. The route crosses the high Aubrac plateaus, from Saugues to Saint-Alban and Aumont-Aubrac, before descending to Conques and its Romanesque abbey, a UNESCO-listed jewel. It's a spiritual, contemplative hike, on one of the finest sections of the Via Podiensis: mountain pastures, shepherds' huts, stone crosses and villages welcoming to pilgrims. Waymarking is excellent and stage lodgings plentiful, but book in high season. The best window runs May to October; the Aubrac stays cool and windy even in summer. Bring well-worn shoes and a light pack.
