GR36: Cross-France Trail, Aveyron Section
The Aveyron section of the GR36, through causses, the dolomitic chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux, Dourbie gorges, and Templar villages.
Five days on the Aveyron section of the GR36, which links the Channel to the Mediterranean. The route starts at Millau, dominated by Norman Foster's viaduct whose pylons rise higher than the Eiffel Tower, reaches Montpellier-le-Vieux, a two-hundred-hectare dolomitic chaos where erosion has carved shapes long mistaken for a ruined city, then Nant and its Benedictine abbey at the confluence of the Dourbie and the Durzon, La Couvertoirade, a fortified Templar town with intact ramparts on the Larzac causse, and finally Roquefort-sur-Soulzon and its ripening cellars cut into the Combalou scree. The causses are arid and shadeless: carry two litres of water minimum. The Roquefort cellars are open all year and hold at eight degrees.
