Verdon Gorge: Adventure and Nature
Europe's largest canyon between vertiginous cliffs and turquoise waters.
Three days in Europe's largest canyon, 700 metres of limestone cut by water that has stayed turquoise. The route starts in Castellane, base for whitewater sports, follows the Route des Cretes and its 23 kilometres of belvederes hanging over the void, crosses the Artuby bridge, the highest bungee-jumping bridge in Europe, then reaches Lake Sainte-Croix for kayaking and swimming, before Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a faience-making village wedged between two cliffs. It is a concentrated dose of vertigo and cool water. Part of the Route des Cretes is narrow and one-way, so follow the imposed direction. July and August overwhelm the car parks and the lake; June and September offer the same water with half the crowds.
