Ardeche Gorges by Bike
Panoramic route above the Ardeche gorges, from the Pont d'Arc to character villages, through garrigue and cliffs.
Two days by bike above the Ardeche gorges, on the panoramic road that overlooks the canyon. The route starts at Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, where the replica of the Chauvet cave reproduces the oldest known paintings in the world, passes beneath the Pont d'Arc, a sixty-metre natural arch, then strings together the belvederes including La Madeleine, open onto meanders cut into the limestone, before Saint-Martin-d'Ardeche and Aigueze, listed among France's most beautiful villages. Be warned, this is not an easy ride. The gorge road accumulates serious elevation on south-facing ramps with no shade and no water between viewpoints. Ride early in summer, and watch for heavy tourist traffic in August.
