Gulf of Morbihan: Islands and Megaliths

Three days around the Gulf of Morbihan, a small inland sea said to hold as many islands as there are days in the year, around forty in reality. The route starts at Vannes and its medieval ramparts, reaches the Ile-aux-Moines, the gulf's largest with its stone circle and camellia-lined paths, then the Ile d'Arz and its tide mill, before the Carnac alignments and their three thousand-plus standing stones, the largest megalithic complex in the world, and finally Locmariaquer with its broken twenty-metre Grand Menhir. The islands are reached by boat from Vannes, Larmor-Baden or Port-Blanc, with reduced sailings out of season. The Carnac alignments can be walked freely only in winter; in summer access is guided to protect the heath.
