Fontainebleau Forest: Marked Hiking Circuits
Hikes in Fontainebleau forest, between sandstone boulders for climbers, royal groves, and deserted plateaus.
Two days on the Denecourt trails, the first waymarked network in the world, laid out from 1837 by Claude-Francois Denecourt, a former soldier who devoted his life to opening the forest to walkers. The route links the Franchard gorges and their blue circuit among sandstone boulders, the Apremont gorges and the Barbizon painters' path, Rocher Canon, a family-friendly sector with its fairy pool, the Mare aux Evees platiere, a low heath of Scots pine resembling steppe, and finally Long Rocher and the Sentier des 25 Bosses, a sixteen-kilometre workout along the southern ridges. The 25 Bosses accumulate close to a thousand metres of total ascent despite a maximum altitude of a hundred and forty metres: do not underestimate it.
