Dordogne by Bike: Valley of Castles
Follow the Dordogne from Souillac to Bergerac, past medieval castles, golden stone villages, and Perigord walnut groves.
Four days by bike in the Dordogne valley, from Souillac to Sarlat-la-Canéda. The route links La Roque-Gageac tucked beneath its cliff, Domme with its river panorama, then Sarlat with its exceptional medieval core. This is a picture-postcard Périgord: perched châteaux, flat-bottomed boats on the Dordogne, food markets and golden-stone villages. The route follows quiet roads and some greenways, with gentle-to-moderate terrain. Spring and autumn avoid the summer heat and crowds, which are heavy in Sarlat and La Roque-Gageac. Reckon on 30 to 45 km a day, book accommodation in season, and take time for a canoe trip on the river.
