Burgundy Canal Towpath Hike

Six days walking the towpath of the Burgundy canal, from Tonnerre to Dijon, a flat and continuous route crossing the whole northern duchy. It starts at Tonnerre and the Fosse Dionne, a powerful karst spring whose underground network remains poorly explored, reaches Ancy-le-Franc and its Renaissance chateau designed by Serlio, then Montbard, Buffon's park and ironworks with the UNESCO-listed abbey of Fontenay nearby, the Pouilly-en-Auxois tunnel, 3,333 metres long at the canal's summit level, Chateauneuf-en-Auxois perched above the water, and finally the canal port in Dijon. The towpath is shaded and free of gradient, ideal for a first multi-day walk. Locks stand roughly two kilometres apart and serve as markers of progress.
