Camargue by Bike: Saintes-Maries to Aigues-Mortes
Cycle through the lagoons, bull ranches, and pink flamingos of the Camargue, between land and sea.
Three days cycling in the Camargue, between Arles and Aigues-Mortes, on entirely flat ground but exposed to the mistral. The route starts in Arles, at its Roman arena and the Luma foundation, reaches the Pont de Gau bird park where flamingos, herons and egrets can be watched from a few metres away along raised walkways, then Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and its fortified church, Salin-de-Giraud and its pink salt pans with Piemanson beach, and finally Aigues-Mortes and its intact ramparts. The dykes offer rolling dirt tracks, but the mistral can make a flat ride as hard as a climb. Mosquitoes are fierce at dusk from May to September. Binoculars and repellent are as useful as spare inner tubes.
