Hiking the Calanques

Five iconic calanques between Marseille and Cassis, turquoise coves, white cliffs, and garrigue trails facing the Mediterranean.

Three days of hiking in the Calanques national park, the only peri-urban national park in Europe, between Marseille and Cassis. The route strings together Sormiou, the largest Marseille calanque with its fishermen's huts, Morgiou and its tiny harbour squeezed between cliffs, Sugiton and its crystalline water reached from the Luminy campus, then En-Vau, a miniature fjord walled by climbing routes, before Cassis at the foot of Cap Canaille. The limestone is sharp and there is no water anywhere: allow two litres per person and wear lugged soles. In summer the park closes according to the fire-risk index, published the previous day at 6pm on the prefecture website. Sugiton and En-Vau require a free booking in high season.
